Whilepenguinscan’tfly,theirstiffflippers,webbedfeet,andsleekshapemakethemexpertswimmers.Infact,theyspendmostoftheirlivesintheoceananddonearlyalloftheirhuntingforkrill,squid,andcrabsunderwater.Theycanswimabout15milesanhour,andwhentheywanttogofaster,theyoftenporpoise,orleapoutofthewaterastheyswim.

Onland,penguinshaveanuprightstanceandtendtowaddle,hop,orrunwiththeirbodiesangledforward.Polarpenguinscantravellongdistancesquicklyby“tobogganing,”orslidingacrosstheiceontheirbelliesandpushingforwardwiththeirfeet.Ifit’sespeciallycold,theyhuddletogetherinlargecoloniesthatprotectthemfrompredatorsandprovidewarmth.Thesecoloniesconsistofthousands,andevenmillions,ofpenguins.
